Are Portable Brake Controllers Legal

Electric Brake Controller Laws

Electric brakes are commonly used on caravans and trailers over 750kg but are legally required (*limited alternatives maybe available) on all caravans and trailers with a GTM over 2,000kg.

Electric brakes are automatically applied by the brake controller and can also be manually operated via a manual control on the brake controller which is installed within reach of the driver.

In order to be compliant with Australian Design Regulations, you must be able to control the signal sent to the trailer brakes at any given time. Failure to do so may void your insurance policy in the case of an incident. Our Portable units are fitted with manual overrides which ensure that you're towing both legally and safely.

Another point to consider is the number of axles you are towing and the legal limits of your tow vehicle, exceeding these specifications could also get you in trouble in the case of an incident. Please read the manufacturers documentation for more insight into the legal limits of your tow vehicle.
